I was very interested in Jim Whetren”s article on modifying the George Thomas quick change hand turning tool rest, as I have just bought George Thomas” book to attempt to make a tool rest for use with clock work.
I have a Seig C3 mini lathe, and Jim”s article seems to be aimed more at these sorts of mini lathes (what you can see of the lathe in his pictures certainly looks familiar) than the Myford Geo Thomas usually has in mind, However, the bed centre gap in his article is 61mm, and on the C3 I make the gap only 25mm. Am I measuring the right gap or has he a much bigger machine? Can anyone advise if this tool post will still work okay with only half the gap, or should I look at another way of securing/locking it?
I am a newcomer to all this, and Jim”s version of the tool rest seemed to be much easier for me to tackle but it looks like I will have to modify it quite a bit.
(Jim”s article was numbered 4991. I found it via Google, but had a bit of trouble finding it from within the MEW website itself).
