I have a 6" Myford Rotary Table purchased from them in 1964 when I bought my VM-C mill. This is similar to the Soba or Vertex models – although mine has 4 slots in the table not the current three of the Vertex.>>

My query arises because right from the start, I have been troubled by the table moving laterally when setting up work on it and trying to get things centred. The movement is only of the order of one thou, (0.03 mm) but it does make really accurate centering difficult. The lateral location of the table on devices of this type is by means of a machined needle roller bearing with an inner ring. As far as I have been able to establish, the amount of lateral movement that I experience is at the lower end of the specified Radial Internal Clearance for these races. So is the amount of play that I am getting "normal"? I have of course checked the relevant adjustments.>>

In other threads members have spoken well of similar tables and their accuracy – particularly in relation to the 6" Vertex with no mention of any problem with side play. I would be interested in the experience/comments of others.>>

Hi Mike, not familiar with this table but I would not expect any play in the bearing particularly on a Myford product [even though they may have imported this item?]

The only one I ever had occasion to take apart was some 40 years ago and that had pre-stressed angular contact bearings–can't recall the make but I would suggest that something is wrong–Iwould not be happy with it !! only my opinion !

Maybe the two guys ex-Myford engineers will be able to help–search Myford in this forum and you should find them.

How are you measuring this "lateral" movement?

Kwil – With a finger type dial gauge resting on the central bore and pusing and pulling the table with everying below firmly clamped.

Thanks for those who have replied. Since posting I have discovered a legible copy of the current Vertex specifiaction and find that the total runout allowed is about half of what I have been observing and considerably better than tthe spec/test I recieved 19 years ago! On that basis I have decided to order a new one due to be delivered later today.

Like JohnF I would expect little or no sideways play to be detectable I will post my findings.

                Once again thanks to all.

See you have decided to purchase a new one but as I have dug it out

07790364189 If you have a Myford that needs serviced, I do not have one only a Chingalese/far east lathe.
Have to say it encouraged me to tidy up my Me's going back a long way

                  Good luck

Thanks for taking the trouble Bob. The information could come in useful as I do have a Myford 254V lathe as well as a Myford MVC mill ; although the latter is a rebadged far eastern machine – as was the original table.

I have printed out your info and filed it with my Myford documents.

An intial check on the new table (although still in its prootective greaas coating) suggest play of only about 0.0001" – there has to be some or rotation would not be possible!

                    Regards

                    Mike
