Q1 Boiler bush sizes

The drawing for the boiler shows the thread sizes for the Blowdown, Clack, Water glass bushes and fusible plug as 1/4″ x 26 tpi. Commercial maufactured Clacks and Water Gauges are normaly 1/4″ x 40tpi.

Is there any reason why they can not be 1/4″ x 40 tpi?

Did the article go on to describe the boiler fittings?? At one time. only the rich could afford to BUY fittings, you only paid for taps and dies once. (Perviding you were careful)

Well done Barry, I’m just writing up the boiler article for ME right now and of course 40 tpi is what I should have drawn. I will have a bit to say about commercial clacks and how to make them work properly later on!

Thanks Nick. I will amend my copy of your boiler drawing. I think, also, that the dimension for the depth of the flanges is missing. I would think they are are about 10mm. Can you confirm.

Hi nick.

I have rev 2 of your drawings Q1-008-L006 and L007 as supplied by Polly and cannot find the flange depth for front tube plate, throatplate etc. Also fire hole is not dimensioned other than it being 24 long.

I’m having the boiler made for me, so may have more questions in the future.

Hi Barry,

Sorry to be slow replying, just checked and these dimensions are definitely missing. Obvious when its pointed out!

Boiler flange dimensions will be decided by the boilermaker, need to be just wide enough to make a sound joint. 6mm is enough, 8mm is ok.

I made the firehole oversize at 40mm od by 4mm wall, it could be smaller if you like, but bigger is easier to keep fed with coal.

Sorry to be a pain, but on the steam pipe bush on front tubeplate,Drg Q1-008-L006 & L007, the dimensions are 18m dia with 4 holes 6BA on 13mm pcd. On the regulator assy drg, Q1-008-L008, they are shown as 22mm dia with holes on 15mm pcd. Can you confirm which are the correct dimensions.

22dia would seem to be the correct size.

Oops, sorry for that. I made the first boiler with the 22mm bush and the second one with 18mm. If you make it 18 the bolt holes can break into the ‘O’ ring recess, so 22 is safer.
