Forgetting about this being a puzzle for the moment, what an interesting piece it is fully assembled. I’d love to make a much more simplified “Art” piece with a similar aesthetic but wouldn’t know where to start.

        <p style=”text-align: left;”>Start with some paper and sketch out a few ideas.</p>
Mixed materials will look good, as in the puzzle above.

Finish wise if you can bead blast brass parts they look good.

You can choose to leave machining marks on the parts or remove them for a refined finish.

I guess precision will be the kicker for an art project.

Very interesting project with no right and wrong answers.

        Mick.

Of course, you could get really creative and attempt something like this…

Mind-boggling! A fine piece of designing and metalwork.

I sort of recall, and I forget from how far back, an ME article describing a shaping-machine exercise based essentially aorund dovetails. I can’t recall though if it was a puzzle a bit like those wood-block ones, or simply an art-work.

Nigel, built one of those, it’s on a shelf somewhere.

It looks like you have dovetailed two pieces of metal together from 90 degrees apart. They call it the impossible dovetail.

The trick is the dovetail is not cut at 90 degrees to the face but from corner to corner.
