I have to make two new brass oil sight glasses for a Pultra 17/70 but am unsure what to use for the glass part anyone got any suggestions, the glass part is only about 7mm across so that’s going to be fun,

The answer is in the name – glass.
I’d use a microscope slide as stock but picture class might be thin enough. Scribe and snap over a pice of thin rod or straight wire on a flat surface to roughly shape. Then stick to a bit of rod with diameter equal to the finished glass size. Then grind to size with a fine stone or diamond disk, preferably wet.
Un stick from rod. Classically shellac or sealing watx would be used to stick the glass to the rod. This has the advantage that it will release if it gets too hot.

        Robert.

The originals are plastic rather than glass as I discovered when I put paint remover on my headstock 🙁 Acrylic sheet is readily available and easy to shape.

I took some pictures when i re-made mine:

Thanks for the replies, the old ones are acrylic but probably only 1mm thick, Roderick how thick were the ones you made what did you use to mount the acrylic ( wax chuck ) .

Is that a little note of sarcasm, Rod ?

                Michael,

Sarcasm was not intended.  The pictures look fine on my PC, from where they originated but not, alas, as i see know on my Tablet or, presumably, on yours.

                Dell,

I used double sided tape and very fine cuts.  I can’t remember the thickness offhand.

                    That seems to work now.

here’s the selection I tried to post before:

The last picture looks like a very nice Pultra,I am in the process of restoring my 17/70 although the sight glasses are not for my lathe.IMG_1098IMG_1100IMG_1099IMG_1944

i must say it’s a lot easier adding pictures

Turned out to be easier than I expected.
