As a lad I build two or three of the Airfix ‘Pug’ 0-4-0 shunters. I don’t recall seeing this in the Dapol range (I may be wrong about that) and I have never see a full-size loco descrivbed as a ‘Pug’.

Does anyone know what the full szie prototype of this kit was? it strikes me that it might be a ‘true scale’ alternative to a Tich.

O.K. I confess – having built a boiler and some stationary engines, and now got a rolling chassis for my shunter, it occurs that I have all (well most of) the skills to combine the three approacxhes into a live steamer… don’t get over-excited – I plan many models, start a several and finish a few…

          Hi Neil

You want Dapol kit C026, described as a BR 0-4-0 Saddle Tank.

According to the blurb on the assembly instructions, the original was designed by Mr J A F Aspinall, Chief Mech. Eng of the Lancs and Yorkshire Railway and was first built at the Horwich works in 1891.

Short wheel base so well suited to sharp curves and a compact little loco.

That’s the one, thanks guys. It’s a bit stranger than I remembered – look at that strange pipe-style rosshead guide!

I now have an assembled and partly painted Dapol Pug, courtesy of Hobbies, together with a footbridge and some 1:12 brick slips.

Nice trip down memory lane and will look nice forgotten in a siding when I finish my LMS 00 layout.

I think you'll find that it's a cover plate to stop all the dirt getting on to the sliding surfaces.

IIRC somebody did a kit for one in 5"G some years ago. I saw one once and I think the model boiler's firebox had been extended so far back into the cab that the driver and fireman must have been more than just anorexic – in full size they'd have been about as thin as fag paper!
