Why are Proxon motor spares are like gold dust??

I did have a KS230 mini saw sawing mainly FR2 Epoxy Paper copper clad circuit board, yes I saw’d fibre glass boards once in a while with the appropriate saw blade, the blades were forever catching the splitter wedge knife….. one day zilch dead as  dodo, I did post about this many moons ago.

I do have the mini drill that uses the same motor – never have given me any problems I ‘will’ say.

I wrote, wrote and wrote about getting a motor, for reasons unkown I never got replies.  Is this because the motors are very limited? These things are still being produced, from what I understand it is a 85W sewing machine motor, there used to be a website but they report ‘non in stock’.

It seems the KS230 problem is the splitter, I noted some blades are thinner and some are thicker.

I’ll give thumbs up for the mini drill but nothing for the KS230 and its flimsy design – that includes that adjustable bar which I consider far from accurate.

      Anyone know a work around?

If it’s a new motor you want, this site may be your best bet.

I’m in the UK and I ordered a new motor from them for a different Proxxon machine several years ago. The whole transaction was straightforward.

If it is the usual bog basic brushed sewing machine motor, they seem quite common on e-bay.

I think that can be a special one made for Proxxon. The running direction is CCW and not CW , but I have no idea how the sewing motors turnning direction.

As all is in the housing you can not change on a given motor in a easy way the turnning direction.

Hmm… just the sort of sneaky trick manufacturers use to lock you into their overpriced spares programme.

Most (but not all) universal motors for sewing machines run CCW. However, all that is needed to reverse the direction of rotation is to reverse the field windings by 180 degrees (ie swap them around at the stator connection). Will require a soldering iron or crimps and a little care. Alternatively, hunt around for a CW motor if that is what’s required.

@ EUR 63.99 makes you think if it’s worth it, how long will a new one last??

If you can get at the motor you just reverse the field coils or reverse the armature windings, the field coils and armature windings receive the full mains voltage.

There’s been a few short cuts on the KS230 design….. tale strieght edge should provide a very good clue.

Seems to be a continuation of the original Emco unimat motor saga.

                      Regards  Ian.

Having looked at the item Bill Phinn linked earlier …

I think I would probably be looking for an alternative motor.

                        Brushless DC perhaps ?

Edit: __ Not sure about the price/availability of controllers, but the motors look reasonably priced:
