Progress number one drill

Hi, my progress drill has started to jump out of gear, and it’s becoming a bit of a pain. Has anyone owned or worked on a progress drill and been able to stop it jumping out of gear. If so can they please let me know know how they did it. Thanks.

Hello Michael,

My drill in a New Progress No 1, bought second hand in 1960. No gearbox on that one, yours is clearly a different model with similar name.

Came across a few Progress drills in my time, all belt driven. Dont ever recall seeing one with a gearbox ?

Never came across one of those before !

I wonder could it be the gear selector slipping ?, this is not unknown in lathe gearboxes.

Might be worth a stripdown, since it wont just go away.

Hi MichaelC – I have a 2G, the same as the one MichaelG has shown.

I never had an issue with it jumping out of gear, but the gear selector lever has a detent, and I wondered if someone in the past has taken the lever off and lost the detent ball ?

Does the lever feel as if it snaps positively into position ?

Thanks for the information chaps. I found the problem was that a past owner had rebuild the plate that locks the gear selection lever. However for some reason he had made it badly with a fixing screw head in one of the indents. This was allowing the ball to jump out of the much shallower indent. I have remade the plate and all is well now. Thanks again.

One thought that occurs to me, now that we seem to have established that this machine is a Progress 2G is that the first reduction gear, the helical one shown in Michael G's posting, is made in Tufnol. It may have been damaged by repeated unintended release as the gears have separated under load.

It runs in an oil bath but it might be timely to examine it now that the cause of jumping out of gear has been found and rectified
