Sorry that doesn't really answer your question, but it might get a few people thinking.

      .

      Lofty,

Not sure if you saw my post on 13th ^^

I must admit, I had hoped for some feedback … even if only ridicule.

MichaelG, Yes I did see it thanks, and like you was expecting a few more to think about the terminology..

I suppose that calling a digital caliper a vernier caliper, (or 'digivern&#39 can be likened to every vacuum cleaner being called a Hoover.

Pierre Vernier (1580 – 1637) will be rolling in his grave.

Standard name for a Ball Pein hammer was a Persuader when I was at work.

I guess that's Mr Pein rolling in his grave too. Tee Hee

We / I used to have to get five people to measure a part five times to get a mean for capability studies. We gave up using verniers on the factory floor and used go no go gauges instead. Most people stole the verniers or used them to open cans prop open doors or they might try to stick the sharp ends in wood when used like a tomahawk.

Oh happy days… no wonder I'm grey.

          Jesse.

Interesting that the NPL uses the spelling 'calliper'.

But why two different spellings in the same document ?

                Les.

                  Les,

I think you will find that NPL's document is consistent in its spelling [except in Appendix B, where a hyperlink is quoted]

Neil's uncredited image appears to be from another source.

                    Hi Michael,
I assumed that the image Neil posted was from an NPL document.

                    Les.

To be honest, I was surprised that the google embed code didn't automatically brand it!
