Here’s a gadget I’ve just completed for my mill, a centre finder as described in MEW no.98. The design is fairly simple and I was intrigued by the making of the prism. The finished tool seems to work well. Polishing of the optical surfaces using Brasso gives a surprisingly good image and the 60deg. prism angle presents the eyepiece at a convenient position. Total cost for some 12mm perspex and a magnifying lens from eBay was about £5. The rest from the odds and ends box.

Funnily enough I was looking at that article in the online archives last weekend. It looks useful. No objective magnification though so effectively near zero working distance. This limits it’s usability on anything other than flat objcts.
