We get a terrible draught through our kitchen extractor which vents outdoors. We have tried various back-draught flaps in the duct and hoods on the outside, but to no real avail. In all cases, the wind blowing past the outlet on the wall seems to pull the flaps open and let in a draught at the same time.

Has anyone found such a device that actually works or an extractor hood that has works in such a way that it prevents draughts by design?

      Thank you.

If you have accessible 4″/100mm or 6″/150mm ducting you can get duct connectors with built in backdraught shutters. Together with the existing exterior shutter this would stop most draughts.

There are various makes of 4″ fan on the market with automatic shutters built in. These are electro mechanical so not dependant on springs or gravity. This is one such by Silavent I haven’t used one so can’t report on how effective they are. It would depend where/how your fan is fitted as to whether this is an appropriate solution.

I have a small Ventaxia fan in the wet-room, of the style that John mentions, and the shutter works very well

It might be informative to search Espacenet for their patents

Thank you for the suggestions. I shall look into these.
