Consider the shower unit a 'consumable item' – and buy a newie. Job done – sorted! Onto next job…….

If you are a bit hazy on electrical stuff this is not something to experiment with. Electricity potentially dodgey – electricity plus water potentially fatal.

OK you say that you are happy to "fit but not fault" electrical bits. Your shower unit looks to me to have seen better days. B & Q sell similar units starting at just over £60. If you are OK with installing this type of thing then that will probably be your cheapest solution.

            .

You have to lean forward, close one eye, squint out of the other whilst balancing on the side of the bath on one foot.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions, much appreciated.

The bungalow was built in the early '70s so deductions based on the tiles are absolutely correct.

The unit is more than 10years old, so more things are likely to give up the ghost from now on.

              A replacement it will be.

The CB is 40A so an 8.5Kw unit will be fine base on 240v, with 9.5Kw right on the limit.

An exact replacement from Mira is way beyond my pocket, but a subsequent search proved fruitful, prices as low as £44 for a Triton.

              Recommendations on make please.

The CB is protecting the cable, probably worth checking cable size is correct if your changing the shower

Also, where does the other earth cable come from at the Electric input, there seems to be two earths coming in with the cable before it gets to the feed cable terminations?

Can you post a picture if possible please?

If I'm buying something like that I start at Screwfix. They are sometimes cheapest but once I have sorted a model I look to see what's on the web. Even amazon and ebay.

The 1st thermostatic one from screwfix set for lowest price 1st is this one

We have high pressure hot water now but have used Triton in the past.

You may need to check out what the Building Regulations say about doing this work.

It would probably classify as notifiable work in part P. I have no knowledge as to the other sections of the regs.

if you buy a Triton, make sure that you run cold water through it after a shower to remove the residual heat from the element. I did not when I bought one in 1981, changed the boiler in 1983 because it was totally blocked with scale. Replacement, after its cooling down periods was still working in 2009.

I thoughtfully linked to the cheapest thermostatic one OB as suspect that is what you have and that you wouldn't like the manual types.

I recommend triton showers having recently fitted one it had an apparent fault and an engineer was sent 3 days later free of charge to rectify the problem which was water pressure 5 minutes later problem fixed and everything ok

                                    I'm leaning towards that make.

Which model did you purchase and from whom please?

How did he rectify the lack of water pressure?

                                                Chris,

Earth goes to the cold water pipe as required.

                                                Mira electric shower unit

Didn't mention at first, but the unit started playing up with fluctuations in the heat of the water on two occasions prior to tripping the CB.

No idea why I didn't mention this.
