      Hello

I have just salvaged a Qualters and Smith 6" power hacksaw. It seems to be in good condition. However the Motor is missing. I know these machines are wired for 3 phase but could anybody tell me what size the motor would normally be and what the outside diameter of the drive pulley ? I would like it to cut about 100 strokes a minute if possible.

      Thank you

100 per min a wee bit fast, I'd look at about 80. You'd be OK with a 1450/4 pole half horse power single phase motor. Ian S C

            Thanks Ian

Any idea about the size of the pulley I should fit . The driven pulley is 240mm or 220mm. I was thinking of something around 70mm to 85mm

            Thanks

For what its worth my Vee belt drive Manchester Rapidor has a two stage reduction coming out around 13 or 14 to 1 reduction. Approximate pulley diameters are 80 mm on motor and intermediate shaft, driving 260 on the intermediate and 300 on the saw crank. Wave a tape at it guesstimate as the saw sits at the end of my big lathe and I'd need to pull it out and unhitch a cover to measure properly.

When you get it going do remeber to bolt it down as they tend to wander around a bit if unrestained. The Rapidor moved a couple of inches per hour of operation on a smooth "underfloor boarding" floor before being restrained.

Well done they are good robust machines but a little on the heavy side.

You will find 1/2 HP is not enough it may turn the machine over but the cut speed will drop under load.

My 6" Qualters & Smith has a 1&1/2 hp 1425 rpm? single phase motor and cuts well with it, I will check the pulley sizes for you tomorrow.

Once I can find the manual I can tell you what the recommended cut speed is.

                Regards

                Paul

                    Hi

Thanks to eveybody who posted help. I have got a 11/5 hp motor single phase motor but its base foot is 100mm between centres so I will have to make an adaptor plate because the casting mounts on the saw are 80mm between centres.
