I think 10mm wide 5mm pitch timing belts will be fine (from experience).

Where can you buy one for £130? The only ones I have seen are at least £280, mostly £300+.

You could just put a bearing at the other end. A single ball for the spindle to thrust on would be good enough. Then you can auto reverse electrically. With tumbler gears you will have to stop rhe motor,move gears and re-start the motor.

Hi Robert,

It might pay you to look at how a window screen wiper motor is constructed. That is after you have drilled all the rivets out !

I've looked at plenty of wiper motors over many years and fixed more than a few.

The one pictured in your album is typical, Adding a thrust ball to either the pressed steel motor cover or the cast alloy gear case should not be too difficult. Typically its the motor end that has no thrust beraing, typically just a self aligining (bll shaped) oilite type bush. There is normally enough room in the back of the housing to hold a suitable sized ball. A spacer / locator might be required but that's about it.

I was mistaken about the current price, in the last few months prices have rocketed, maybe due to CO19. This is the cheapest I could find, and the buyer risks paying more if they are unlucky with import duty additions. Of course, you would still have to carry out a lot of modifications to make any of them fit your machine.

Thanks for all the help. As I remarked to Brian, I enjoy designing and making tools like this much more than using them. The journey is the destination.

I'm sticking with my approach – cheap and cheerful stepper supported by bits I already have. I spent some of last night designing how I'm going to connect stuff up and will post here for comment when I've got something complete.

Basically I still want to be able to use the handle, but I also want to be able to disconnect the motor if I need.

More to follow (but not toinight).

If you are daft enough to start taking a well engineered wiper motor apart just to stuff a bearing ball in there, then good luck.
