      Good morning all,

This is a whole new lot of information !

I do believe the problem is behind the apron, which as you say is heavy. I recall having to remove it long ago to replace the gear driving the carrage [I had bent the shaft ] and it is quite a job to handle the weight. Sad to say, there does not appear to any other way. I will look for that circlip mentioned to check it.

Howard, I would be most greatfull for those details.

I have much more to follow up on, thanks to everyone

Just looking at that video of the stripdown, and it answers some of my questions. I could not work out how the different drives were engaged, and it,s so simple when you see it.It sure is a great help

I suspect that,s where the problem is.

My thanks to Howard for his offer. At least I now feel I can make progress.

          Have to disagree with Bazle.

If the keyway is at the botton, the key WILL do as he says, and fall out of the shaft.

At the top the key stays in the shaft, or or did for me, on the two times that I have removed the Apron.

Maybe Bazle was thinking of the key staying in the worm, rather than the shaft?

In the worm, it is easy to knock it out of position when re inserting the shaft.
