      Hi Stewart

      Interesting engine.

I look forward to seeing the complete construction series.

Hoepefully it will be seen working at next year's Model Engineer Exhibition.

      regards David

        Thanks David

        The engine is now complete.

And the video of the completed engine running showing the reversing valve in operation

That's very impressive and looks beautifully made and finished.

As you say it does respond quickly but unlike some *engines* it does not have a heavy crankshaft.

This is not a criticism in any way, however its not really an engine but is a motor. Self starting is pretty much a given with motors too.

Presumably on ships steering this motor would use hydraulic oil? It would be more power efficient on hydraulics compared to pneumatics (all else being equal).

            I like it a lot.

That last video is a delight to behold. Well done, Stew; keep 'em coming.

              Ian,
I have just looked up the words 'motor' and 'engine' in the dictionary, and this is definitely an engine. If not, then over 200 years of engineering history will have to be rewritten to take account of all those wrongly labelled steam motors which did so much to lay the foundations for the industrial world we know today.

              wink

Rather sheepishly I admit to opening my mouth before my brain was ready. My only defence is that I only originally saw compressed air as the medium so as you rightly point out it is really a version of steam engine.

Steam engines and boilers are always next to each other and together form the engine. If I had separated the two things I would have still described the piston and cylinder bit as an engine but I didn't make the same connect ions with the Dake type.

                I still like it though!

Maybe I have the wrong dictionary, but could someone elucidate me on this motor/engine dichotomy?

I didnt look in a dictionary before I wrongly stated that the Dake was a motor, However I just found this with Google

                      http://www.worldwidewords.org/articles/engine.htm

Which explains it better than I can.

Yes Ian I think that does help and the fact that it is a none dead centre engine speeds up the resonce time

This is not a criticism in any way, however its not really an engine but is a motor. Self starting is pretty much a given with motors too.

Engine or Motor it doesn't realy matter:- as the man said you can call me what you want as long as you don't call me late for dinner smiley

Presumably on ships steering this motor would use hydraulic oil? It would be more power efficient on hydraulics compared to pneumatics (all else being equal).

I havn't been able to find any reference of it running on oil, but what I do know was that it was used extensivly in mining and was powered by air piped down from the surface, hence you'd got a none sparking motor

I keep turning up examples of this engine being used a a very wide range of aplications thanks to its compact design and flexibility, it wasn't very economical in the use of steam, but in aplications where this didn't realy matter its advantages more than made up for this.

I was wondering if they used the exhaust steam from the low presure cylinders on a marine engines to use it for ship stearing ?. perhaps someone could comment on the vesibility of this.

                        Thanks again for your interest

                        Stew

Make the back out of transparent material so we can see the unusual motion inside??
