Under another thread, John Coates asks what people think
of a boring head he has found offered on the web.
Going on the picture, it seems to have a chromium plated
Morse taper shank.  In my very limited experience I have not
seen one before.  Is it a good idea or a very bad one?  Could
those who know please tell us?

          Hi Frank,
Chromium is very hard and wear resistant so, from this point of view, it is a good thing on a morse taper.

But idealy go for hard chrome plating. the people that do this usually grind the finished item to size.

O I, Chrome is colourless, It”s the Nickel plating beforehand that shines and that’s soft chroming.

              Regards  Ian.

              Hi There
The problem with chromium plate is that it peels.
Remember your bike handlebars when you were a kid.

It is normally called flash chrome and is as sharp as a razor.

By all means buy it if it is a good price but make sure you can change the taper for a non chrome one if it starts to peel.
              regards David

That’s why I pointed to Hard Chrome David.

                  Regards Ian.

                  Hi Circlip
Have you ever seen hard chrome after it has been deposited?
Looks nothing like chrome, is anything but smooth, takes a long time to deposit and is very expensive to get done.
                  Then it needs expensive grinding.
                  regards David

Read what I rote mate. Yes I have. Had to have my forks on my Italian motorcycle operated on in this way.

The Italians are fantastic designers and ingineers but can’t paint and definately can’t bl***y chrome plate.

                      Re-iterate, go for HARD chroming.

                       Regards  Ian.

Another dustbin diving session today. two draper morse adaptors 3MT to 1 and 2 MT : )

Surface rust but otherwise really bright (brighter than my new ones), but it isn’t chrome but very fine ground steel.
