        Hi al.l made piston rings for my lynx engine out of cast iron ggg40 after heating to cherry red and letting cool the rings are still very flexible .Any rings i worked with in the past have been very brittle. Any advice will be apecciated

          Thats SG iron which is a ductile iron, often used for castings where you don't want a brittle part like crankshafts and axles.

           

          I think the Din number you want is GC25

            The last rings I made , were made from an old brake disc, after heat treatment they were more brittle than SG iron, but more springy, previous set of rings were made of SG iron, not too sure of them, but they are working. Ian S C

              Thanks gays for all the help will get some S G iron and make some more rings and go from there

                SG iron is what you have already used that is why they are flexing and not brittle, the ggg in the code indicates that you are using Spheroidal Graphite (SG) Iron

                  Thank Moderator can get GR 17 cast iron from the people i get my material from ,will give that a go. Did try oil quench them in oil- this helped
