      Hi All

Another question… I've just been dismantling the countershaft unit on my Boxford C lathe, and I noticed the tiny little pin in the boss of the large pulley as shown in the photo in the eight o'clock position. No idea what it is there for – any clues? The only thing I can think of is that there is supposed to be a thrust washer (none there now) and the pin would originally have protruded a bit further to provide an anti-rotation device. Other than that, clueless.

Also, should the bushes for the countershaft be greased or oiled? They appear to be oilite, so I'm thinking oil, but it looks like they have been greased in the past.

      Thanks,

      Rob

Grind, it looks to me that the gear has been bushed down, it looks as if there is a line showing the o/d of the bush and the pin is drilled half and half to stop the bush spinning. It could even be a screw with the head cut off.

GB, I think you've answered your own question. Long time since I fiddled with my countershaft, but now you mention it, I'm sure it's what you describe, a pin, protruding about 1mm to engage with a washer. The washer is nothing special, just plain steel, about 1.5mm thick, unless my memory is very wrong.

Stops the light alloy pulley wearing.

Edit; The c'shaft bearings on my ME10 have oil nipples, so I useoil.

Thanks Chris and Clive for the prompt replies – what a great forum this is thumbs up

I don't think its been bushed, that line is, I think, just scoring from not having the washer that Clive describes – there's no evidence of a line on the other side of the pulley.

              I'll sort out a washer.

              Thanks again,

              Rob

By coincidence today I came across the thrust washer for that end of the pulley. Its basically a steel washer with and the small hole is to ensure the thrust washer is locked to the ali pulley.

Excellent, thanks Ian. I'd noticed there is quite a thick phospor-bronze looking thrust washer on the other side of the yoke, but the steel one must have got mislaid at some point in the last 60 years.

                  Regards,

                  Rob
