Pin for Multifix

Wasn’t sure where to post this.

A bit of advice please, I have made a new post for the Multifix size Aa on my Myford and as I didn’t use the steady pin initially I thought I would do it as I have it apart, underneath are three equally spaced holes although I only need one but am not sure how to get one in the correct place in the compound if it’s slightly out the holder won’t be square to the headstock , I know the Multifix will tour but it could be possible to get the hole half a hole out so if anyone has a suggestion or has already done it would be much appreciated , hope that makes sense.

Do the three holes go all the way through to the top? Or are they blind holes?

Could you make one of them into a through hole, at reduced diameter (maybe 1/8″) if necessary?

With a through hole you can put a short transfer punch into the larger blind hole, turn the toolpost over and align it. Push a piece of 1/8″ rod through the small hole from the top and biff it with a hammer so the transfer punch makes a mark where the pin should be.

Make a thin sheet metal template of the bottom of the toolpost complete with one hole. Loosely dowel it to the toolpost. Fix the toolpost down and align it. Clamp the template to the compound so it does not move and remove the toolpost. Use the hole in the template to tell you where to drill for the pin.

They are blind holes and it would be difficult to drill a through hole because it is very hard.

AFAIK, a feature of the 40 position Multifix is that the 3 holes are not spaced at 120 deg. but differ by 2.25 deg., ie 1/4 x 9 deg. Thus a randomly drilled hole will allow alignment to at least that accuracy, by selective fitting, provided that the PCD is correct of course.

I have no idea if the specifics of what you say is correct, but what you describe might have solved a Multifix mystery.

It has been remarked here before that with 9 degee indexing, the toolpost cannot do common angles like 30, 60 or 15 degrees.

With judicious angular spacing of the holes, that limitation could be overcome. Not pondering this for long, so this could be wrong, but if the holes had something like (n x 9) +/- 3 degrees between them, I think that would fill in the blanks (15 is 18-3; 30 is 27+3; 60 is 63-3).

Thanks for that. Scaling off the drawing inside the document: going clockwise, there is 75 degrees between the peak of the notch at 1200h* and the first hole (roughly 1430h). There is 102 degrees between first and second hole (just before 1800h) and 93 degrees between second and third (at 2100h). Third to first is 165 degrees.

* hence the troughs of the notch are 4.5 degrees either side of this peak.

Edit: in Dell’s picture above, the leftmost hole is the 1800 one in my words above.

The holes on the part in the video are through holes.
