I know this is an old thread but I have been looking for info on an old Wolf Cub drill Circa 1963. I decided to resurrect one I have had for years. I thought I would fit new mains lead and grease gears etc. Horrified to find only two wires in the lead. No earth at all and the drill is an all metal body! Does anyone know if this is the norm? Pictures here show double insulated but mine does not have that badge and the armature clearly states "Not to be used with double insulated models" Maybe I should earth the casing as I don't wish to light up at my age!!

Be pleased to hear any comments

      Cheers

      Clive

From my (somewhat hazy) recollection of that era, it seems to me that electric drill manufacturers in the UK (and probably elsewhere) (particularly Wolf) around that time were making a big thing about "Double-Insulated" and not needing an earth/ground.

Whether double-insulated drills from that period would still be considered safe – even in pristine condition – is something else.

It looks like it has been incorrectly re-wired.

You should rewire it with an earth wire, and ideally have it insulation tested. Is there an earth terminal inside?

Thanks chaps, I am taking your advice Neil There doesn't seem to be a terminal point as such but I have found a tapped hole near the grip so I will use that, I'm sure it will give me peace of mind. It looks well made s9 I'll bring it in to use again(standing well back with rubber gloves at first!!).

            Cheers

All done, not exactly state of the art! Working well anyway and earthed! Better than lying around in cobwebs and dust.

              Thanks for input and advice.

              Cheers

Hi, I know this is an old thread, but I was browsing through some old ME's and came across this page in issue 2555 May 11th 1950 and thought it would be an interesting page to add.

That last one must be a late model, as it is double insulated, a rare thing on a metal bodied drill.

The Wolf Cub and the Black Decker bothe fit into a Picador Cradle that will then make a small lathe and cicular saw still have these and are in working order .. Thiink these were bought in the sixties.

My dad used to use one to turn gun barrels for his model warships, before he got a Unimat to abuse.
