That would be a good subject for a 1:1 model/replica. Some interesting things going on there to get it to lift and rotate the pencil for the next cut.

Hi, I have a Velos SOLO 555 one, which I saved from getting slung in the bin, when I was in my old maintenance job. It’s had a lot of use, but it still works as good as ever, and it doesn’t need  any type of electrical connections to power it.

Oh you SON OF A &%!”¤¤!#”!#”! Did I need to go down this rabbit hole? I don’t even use regular pencils anymore. Yet I know I need to make one of these from scratch before I die. As if I didn’t have enough projects to struggle with.

                    Thanks a lot, pal  🙂

Reminds me of a draughtsman in our office who was an inveterate pipe smoker. When he went for lunch one day and left his pipe on his desk we put the rubber on the end of a pencil in the sharpener, and then put the shredded rubber in his pipe beneath a layer of tobacco.

If you did that nowadays you’d be hauled in front of HR, back then it was just taken as a laugh. I’m sure the victim got his revenge.

                          It would be too long!

I have articles waiting with both Neil and Martin so now there will be two articles and god knows when they will get published.

Many years ago, a friend of mine installed a small “lathe” in his bedroom; it was essentially a sort of pre-Dremel affair secured to his bedside table.

“Look at this!” he exclaimed excitedly, taking a pencil and putting it in the lathe chuck, with the maximum length protruding. He started up the “lathe” and grabbed one of those conventional die-cast pencil-sharpeners we all used to have at skool. He placed the pencil sharpener on the end of the pencil and pushed on it. Seconds later he had reduced the pencil to a tiny stub and had covered the table in shavings.

Hooting with laughter, he then said it was the last remaining pencil in the house…

Sorry, he wouldn’t be allowed to pollute the office with a smoke generator to the detriment of the rest of the office staff

Is no one else capable of looking at old items like this and producing their own replica or do you all need a plan to work to?

To me the designing is part of what I enjoy and if it works once built then that is a lot more satifying then just following along someone else drawings.

I’m sure I can design something like that if I have to, most of what I’ve built have been my own designs. But I’m not above following plans if they are available and to my liking. I’m no model builder though, so I usually end up taking some creative liberties with the design.

Right now I’m working on a metric Bonelle, and while I did start with the available drawings I have modeled everything in CAD and made numerous changes to it.

A wise man learns from his mistakes, a really clever man learns from other people’s so it’s a lot easier to use someone else’s drawings as long as they are correct (not Martin Evans’s)

The cutting action reminds me of the way a carpenter sharpens his pencil ie  by resting it on the bench and shaving it with a chisel. The beauty of this design at least in part seems to be that the two knives oppose each other and thereby avoid breaking the lead.

I tend to use a chisel but cradle the pencil in my hand rather than hold it on th ebench. As you can see it’s been a while since my one like Nick’s was last used.

That happened to my brother in the late 1960s.  It was a mixture of rubber and pencil shavings charred to look like tobacco, and he said it pretty near took the lining off his throat!

He took vengeance – he took to smoking one of the non-tobacco herbal mixes that were fashionable about then.  That came to an end when his wife banished him from the house with it.

As far as the design of the pencil sharpener is concerned, I would like an improved one that can do chisel points as well as round ones.

A variation of the Angel pencil sharpener in the first post could do chisel points and carpenter’s pencils. Until that comes about, I’ll have to carry on using a chisel. Maybe a Quorn? …
