A reference to the Patternmaker's art in MEW 251 prompted me to look up a description of a Pattern Maker that my father had framed and displayed in his office.
He started out as an apprentice Engineering Patternmaker in 1934 at G Perry & Sons Ltd, Leicester. I have his Articles of Apprenticeship and his starting weeks wages were 14 shillings for a 47 hour week!

With the advent of solid modelling & CNC etc. nowadays it's no lesser set of skills simply a different mix.

Some of the patterns on display at Coalbrookdale Museum are really stunning works of art, not like the pickled fish we are supposed to call art today

M farther spent his whole working life at Perry's. From apprentice to chief draughtsman, had some interesting visits in the old days on summer days out to Sheffield furnaces and similar, with cricket and afternoon tea.

When I did my apprentiship at Timsons, it was rumoured the pattern makers were paid the best rates in the place, and that is why I suppose.

I don't know if it's right but I looked up 14 shillings in 1934, and the conversion tells me it's the equivalent of £45.

It might be a reverential position but I think I might give it a miss at that rate.
