      Can anyone help.

Are Parkside Electronics from Nelson still operating? A friend has tried to contact them without result. He is a Teacher at a School where they have an Electric Locomotive. One of the Students has managed to damage the electronic control unit made by them.

Electronics is not my bag so I am unable to help.

            I still need help.

I would like the name of someone who can help with the repair of this controller as the School have been unable to contact Parkside Electronics. The option of replacing the whole unit is not really viable as the School have limited funds for this sort of activity.

For your information the School is on East London/Essex border and this is all part of STEAM curriculum

            Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths.

            I hope someone can help.

An accurate description of what caused it to fail would be helpful. Has the circuit board been looked at ? have any of the switching components got their legs blown off ? Is anything obviously fried ? Noel.

Answering the original question, I've not noticed their advertisements in ME for a long time.

The name "Parkside" appears used by half the on-line commerce world, but wading past all the rhubarb reaches parksiderailways.co.uk.

I assume this is the company meant.

It reveals still, only the locked home-page the owners published early in the pandemic, apologising for the Covid situation and their own unstated but "previous" illness forcing them to "…close until things start to get better" ; to protect their families, they add.

                So not hopeful….

In answer to your question. One of the students, when inserting the DIN plug into the socket on the locomotive did not insert it in the right orientation. This has caused the locomotive to run fine in reverse, but not forwards. I have not had chance to examine the Loco so am unable to state what the circuit board looks like in respect of damage. I hope that next Tuesday I will get sight of the Loco. I will then be in a better position to answer the query.

How on earth was a DIN plug wires in a way that allowed that to happen? Not the student's fault!

Guessing, but twisted and the centre of the plug moving inside metal shield perhaps breaking a wire??

So it's a school. Haven't any of their pupils (not students) gone on to read electronics at university? Otherwise look for your local amateur radio or maker club, then Model Engineering club.

If it still works in reverse you my be lucky that it is just the reversing relay control that has gone wrong.

                          Possibly one of these:

Absolutely the students fault. This had worked perfectly for 4years. The plug was inserted into the socket in the wrong orientation 180deg out, with I suspect some force. Nothing to do with the way the plug was wired.

The only fault was perhaps with the instruction to the students, not enough emphasis on plugging it in correctly.
