photo 4.jpgThought I would start my renovations with a modest challenge. I have a surface gauge by Brown and Sharpe that was very tatty . I have removed the paint , (nitromors and wire wheel in angle grinder ) – carefully avoiding the inferior surface that contacts the plate. I have predicatbley come across rust staining. (see pictures). This is hardened steel so sanding further (to also get rid of the maching marks ) will be difficult. I will have to repaint , – can anyone recommed primer and paint ?.

I would use jenolite to make sure all the rust is neutralised.

            Hi there,

I agree with Neil about the Jenolite as preparation for painting.

However, are you sure you've totally got rid of all traces of the Nitromors? I think you rinse with white spirit but I'm not sure about that – I expect the instructions on the tin will tell you.

Personally, I'd have a go at the corrosion-stained patches with a fibreglass pencil followed by an abrasive filled rubber. Years ago, one brand was called a 'Rust-Rubber' but more recently I've seen them advertised by Garryson (usual disclaimer).

            Best regards,

            Swarf, Mostly!

              Malt vinegar?

10% if you can get it, 5% can be had at tesco for a dollar kinda thing

Check it each day and scrub with a toothbrush

Redunk it until you are happy

DON'T forget about it, the vinegar munches slowly at the metal once the rust has been removed
