I hate decorating and tipping those 10L tubs always ends up with stuff running down the outside.

It occurred to me that some sort of disposable snap on lip with a spout might solve things. Does it exist?  Anyone fancy being first to 3d print?

It’s hardly worth designing and printing something when it’s already available for a couple of quid: LINK

I’m not sure about 10 litre but I have been using one like this. Got it about 10 years ago and fits 4 litre tins.

If not available for 10 litre, decant into 4 litre tins.

Good to see that the concept exists, perhaps one day for 10L cans. The reason for using 10L is economy, so buying smaller cans to pour into or spending ages washing out and reusing old cans is counterproductive – could just buy smaller size cans.

I’ve simplified my lifestyle as much as possible, which includes only decorating with white paint. It suits this old house and any colour can be added by hanging pictures. It also spares the need to cut-in corners and ceilings. I wash down walls, mask everything necessary with low-tack tape and dosh out 2 coats storing rollers and trays in plastic bags for the next day saves washing them out until the current series of jobs is done.

Even better that screwfix had ‘buy a second can at half price’ on the brand I used.

(in similar vein I only own one neutral colour and style of sock…never have to pair them up and if one gets a hole then only one sock gets thrown.)

You would have to be very confident of your snap-on producing capabilities to try this. It would be messy if the lid snaps off against the pressure of 10l of Dulux on the first test run.

Would you be comfortable to invert a 2 gallon plastic tub of paint against even the OEM lid?

Masking tape a sheet of newspaper to the side of the tub to catch the spillage.

Debatable whether it is more of a faff to clean a spout after use or clean the tub if you get too much of a run down the side.

I don’t find dulux trade that liquid so the tub stays fairly clean, may be different for the lesser range but I don’t use that.

Leyland vinyl Matt is pretty thick. Not the trade version (for new plaster?) and it goops out and needs the can held while the blob releases.

Hi, Would a ladle be worth trying, no need to lift the paint can, easier to clean a ladle.

+1 Maurice, I always use a ladle to transfer paint from pot to roller tray.

In somewhat similar vein, those pumps sold with a free bottle of liquid soap wrapped round them can be useful for decanting liquids from cans whose spouts are designed to ensure direct pouring is as messy as possible.

I have an even easier way. Pay someone to do it! I absolutely hate decorating, the professionals can do in one day what I do in 2 or 3, and doing skirting boards wrecks my knees. I came to this revalation when I went self employed. I could do as many hours as I wanted at something I enjoyed and get paid a fair bit more than I pay the decorator, what’s not to like.

Duncan, I’m very much in agreement with you as the years have given me back problems and progress on DIY is slow. The problem around here is trying to find someone to do it! Considering the claims of high unemployment locally getting any sort of contractor is a ‘mare. I’ve got some general builders who did very good roofing work for me and have done good drainage work at the moment and they were keen for other jobs but the results of their painting efforts has me dragging them back today for the second time to clean up the mess they left painting.

At least these guys are keen for work and commute 70 miles but overly gung-ho doing it.
