I am getting closer to do an assembly of the Farm Boy engine and would like to know where you buy your paints from and also what would be the best primer for Ali before putting the top coat on.

Which would be the best for wear resistance, I do plan to run this at some stage

I know people use acid etching primer on steel, would this also be good for the job in hand.

I’ve just started using Craftmaster coach enamels for my traction engines. At the moment the jury is out. The paints definitely have the potential for an excellent finish, but I haven’t quite got the correct technique nailed down yet.

You don’t need an etch primer on steel. I use an anti-corrosive grey primer from Craftmaster for steel. For ‘difficult’ materials, like brass and aluminium, you need an etch primer.

Just about all my models these days are done with Halfords spray cans for the colour coat.

Steel and iron red, grey or white primer depending on what the specific top coat requires so if you were doing a yellow farm Boy a white primer would be best.

Non Ferrous – ali brass bronze I use UPOL Acid-8 etch primer and may then go over this with white primer again if a light colour.

Your cast flywheels if they are a bit pitted may be better done with a high build filler primer, I use UPOL High-5

For durability on the hit and miss engines with their petrol or Colemans fuel I will finish with clear or satin fuel proofer either Halfords (gloss) or ProXL (Satin)

Exhausts I use Thermacure. Occasionally for very hot coloured parts I use VHT spray

This post gives a good idea of my methods

            Thank you both.

@JasonB I did look at Halford paints and did wonder what they are like for this application

I have used U-Pol products before and found them good but not on metal
