Hi Noel, when I was at my day release, the college bought a BOC Autolynx. We got a go at using it, but it wasn’t for the welding course that I was on, as it was for the Auto students, as it was designed for car body repairs, so we were told, the welding course had the more industrial MIG welders which were also becoming a popular thing. It must have been around 1970/71 and was a fairly new design then.

      Regards Nick.

I rented an oxygen cylinder for 16 years from BOC when I was doing a lot of oxy propane work, especially cutting, but my consumption reduced when I got a plasma cutter to the point where it seemed too expensive. However, I keep coming across jobs where I really could use that localised heating for bending and brazing and the advantages outweigh the rental cost. It’s ‘fags and beer money’ as my friend used to say.

The same friend ended up on an oxygen concentraror due to lung disease, at first a unit the size of a washing machine, as he was getting through too many O2 cylinders.. Later he had a portable unit. I often wonder if the same process of adsorption could be used for welding etc.as an alternative to cylinders.

I have a couple of O2 cylinders in the garage, from my father’s old scuba gear. They’re german WWII cylinders, from aircrafts IIRC. Wonder if I could get them certified again?

Thanks for all the replies.  I don’t see any way to get my Portoflame bottle refilled so I think I will go to my local Hobbyweld store. The 9L bottle is £43 plus £70 deposit.  I will start saving right away!

The subject has come up several times, sometimes commented on by me, such as here
