I have no hands-on experience with any of these, but one by Fluke or FLIR would probably be OK for casual (non-calibrated) use. Most of them provide a specific digitized temperature at the central cross-hair.

Unless the sensor is cooled, they are only good for seeing or measuring objects that are hotter than ambient.

If all you want is a temperature at one point, you could also consider a non-imaging version, which might be cheaper.

In the absence of the hoped-for recommendation[s] … I took the plunge, and ordered a Topdon TC002 this morning.

I bought the HANMATEK TI120 Thermal Imager from AliExpress a few weeks ago. It was about £150…claimed rez 320×240 and battery life 6 hrs.

I use the greyscale setting, and with a mild visible-light overlay.

First, I used it to do a quick sweep of all the plugs, sockets, wall warts etc in the house …all seemed OK. So that in itself, for the peace of mind, is worth the price.

Then I went outside to have a look at the house…roofs definitely lose heat, as do CombiBoiler exhausts.

I’ll wait till it gets a bit chillier to give my shed a thorough check.

TC002 arrived this morning [Royal Mail Tracked 24] and appears to be everything I could reasonably hope for.

Endless hours of exploration ahead … and probably an obsessive interest in house insulation … Mmm <sigh>

I am putting a couple of useful reference documents in my ‘Gallery’
