In the mid 60’s i was serving my time in  the tool room, we had a pillar drill that had an optical chuck on it. You looked through the eye piece and you could see through 90 degrees to the work piece on the table.

The work piece would have a cross scratched on to it and you could move the work piece till they both lined up You would the use a centre drill to start your hole that you wanted to drill.

I have looked everywhere for one now for my pillar drill, ok it’s not digital but would be perfect for my needs now.

Has anyone ever seen one of these or better yet where to get one.

      Cheers

I seem to recall an article on making one in MEW, and a more thorough search may well locate it.
I did find this post by Colin Heseltine, which shows one he made in use.

This seems to be a commercial one, but I can’t imagine the original price.

Optical Centre punches are of course available, such as this one from Warco, though there are obviously other sources.

Optical Centre Finder, might be a useful search term, as it shows up This One on eBay

If you fancy a go at Building one, Hemmingway do a kit

The neatest ones in some ways do seem to be the type on eBay, as they have a built in chuck.

I think we are talking about two different things here, one is an optical chuck where you see thru the chuck and the other finds the centre optically and is then removed and the chuck fitted. Is that not correct?

Yes Bernard , you are quite correct.  The Hemingway kit is for an optical microscope which is arbor mounted and would replace the chuck and it’s Arbor for positioning purposes .

Something very odd occurring on this new forum !!

… in your post, the second link is not visible, but there are adverts banners

It displayed OK to me, though something odd happened when I tried to edit out some of the block quotes post for this reply, to try and prevent Bloat-Quoting.

The second link is an excellent example of why it would be advantageous for the old member’s albums to come over here as well.
I appreciate that we were told it wouldn’t happen at launch, but that they may arrive later.
Good examples of where members linked back to their own album, rather than filling a thread directly with their own photos. There are some photos on the post, but mainly links to one or more non existent album(s).
I’d always though a good practice, so folk could view lots of detailed photos if required, but not be swamped with them if just passing through.

I used to have it on for testing a friends website creations, but removed it when it was causing stability problems.
I’ve just checked and apparently it was discontinued for Windows about 10 years ago.
Your post however displays like this; until I submit, I’ve no idea how the quoted part in this post sill show

I’s taken a long time to dawn on me, that the white area to the right of my screen is quite useful when taking screenshots.

If I include it as above, then the forum re-sizes to width, making the requites part of the screenshot both narrower, and more importantly less tall, thus taking up less space.
