Last night's edition of the 'Only Connect' TV quiz opened with Victoria challenging us to spot a mistake.

The faulty question involved identifying the 1981 SDP 'Gang of Four' by decoding photographs representing the names 'Owen', 'Jenkins', 'Williams' and 'Steel'.

The 'Steel' image was of shelved 6" diameter metal rods. The mistake admitted was that David Steel wasn't a member of the 'Gang of Four' or the SDP.

My question is, was there a double mistake? I identified the picture of 'Steel Rods' as being Aluminium. Did anyone else who saw the programme think the same?

American friends may not be aware that the British like fiendishly difficult TV quiz shows. Another question from the same programme needed the contestants to recognise the US Secret Service code-names of the last four US Presidents. People enter only for the honour of competing and there are no valuable prizes. I watch it because I like being humiliated.

I too thought the material was Aluminium, it was far too 'clean' to look like steel.

Could it just be that the programme editors thought that few, if any, would know or even spot the difference?

To confuse things further what looks like the original source image which is claimed to be 'steel'

Thanks to Martin100, I may have to report to Victoria for a spanking. I guess this marking means it's 202 Stainless.

Not sure I approve of silvery Stainless being used to represent 'steel' though. It looks more like Ali alloy to me. No wonder the quiz is so difficult!

                    Cheers,

too boring to watch, at least with the sound off at work on catch up. Thanks for posting the stills.
