I really hope the green activists are able to contain their disappointment when we get to net zero in the UK and nothing in the way of climate has changed. The population will be poorer, will travel less and still be staring at parched fields and swollen rivers. Our 1% reduced to nil is really nowhere near enough when China this year are commissioning 30 new coal fired power stations. The media never seem to explain the whole picture, the science and the politics of it all. Instead it is micro stories of Man glued to Road etc. I have given up wondering Why.

P.S. China operates over 3,000 existing coal fired power stations.

If this attitude is what the UK population wish to have then the UK will no longer be a world leader, we need to show the rest of the world how to solve the climate problem not wait until they decide to show us.

Lead from the front, and they will follow our world class example. Isn’t this how the Great was put into Great Britain.

I suggest we are leaders in sweet FA atm except maybe population growth. AND the Chinese don't work that way, they do what ever they please and damm the rest of us!

The Great was put into Great Britain when we were the biggest pollutant on the planet, the Black Country was proudly very black, as was the Thames for a different reason, we sent children down mines and up chimneys.

They will only follow if the money does just like they always have.

We should not be doing business with China anyway. The mob running the country have killed more people than Hitler and Stalin combined. (80 million, 30 million and 20 million respectively.) The sooner we get out of bed with them and shut them down, the better.

We are only little. Economically, geographically and the speed at which they are currently innovating, they dwarf us.

This particular taxpaying member of the UK population is rather fed up of having to pay through the nose for serial (seemingly ignored) virtue signalling schemes imposed by various flavours of our polititions.

ROTFLMAO ! Since when ? Presumably this was a "tongue in cheek" remark ?

I don't know if its a reflection of society as a whole but just lately this forum has started to descend into a really sour, cynical place. It's rather sucking the joy out of a place I certainly used to enjoy and come to for respite from the outside world.

At an industrial manufacturing level the cost of energy is paramount. Its one of the reasons China is so competitive and we see this in the price of imported machine tools. Wind can of course be converted into usable energy. Its been happening since about ad 700. The untapped resource in the UK is tidal power. We have huge tides and they will keep coming and going while there is the moon. We are surrounded by tidal water and as a civil engineer its a mystery to me why we dont do more in this area. Its not high tech or trendy enough perhaps.

Sorry Jon I'm as guilty as the rest, it's because we are discussing the many frustrations of life, perhaps we should all stick to model engineering and the like?

Yes. It seems certain topics have become religions for some adherents and probably should be circumscribed as such. I remember the good old days when the biggest argument was the correct crest radius of a BS thread form.

Sadly our lives will be seriously impacted by current events, most of which are the result of politics.

The biggest issues are obviously not easy to influence from little old Blighty, but that doesn't stop us having to survive them and that needs the British Government to act appropriately as well as individuals.

Sour and cynical might be hear for a little longer. crying

I think it was the heat, I get pretty bloody-minded as soon as it passes 27degC.
