      Hi all,

Ive had an issue for a while getting oil into the z axis gib on my Omnimill. I fitted an oil pump a while ago and cant pump any oil into the gib so I thought it must be blocked. Tried a jack pump thinking it would clear it but no joy so decided to strip it down today to see whats wrong.

Didnt find any blockage but the small hole on the right is supposed to be the oil hole. When the gib is done up its simply getting blocked by the casting.

So I was thinking of grinding a Y pattern along the gib to distribute the oil. Any thoughts anyone?

Ian, I guess you have checked to see if there is an oil groove in the mating slide? I had an Omnimill, and have a vague recollection.

Chris the mating side on the column is smooth.

I take it the hole is at the top part of the Z axis.
Grinding a shallow groove from the hole in a zig-zag way to near the end of the gib will allow oil to be carried in the gib for the length of the Z axis way, leakage will depend on what clearance exists between gib and slide surface.

You also need to consider doing something similar for the non gib side.

Emgee, yes the hole is at the top. I am going to grind a y pattern into the gib but grinding the slide on the column will be very difficult so I will have to make do with the gib side done.

Also seeing as I have the table off I will look at the backlash I have in the screw and nut.
