        Hello,
i am starting to continue the building of the Simplex loco, my dad started about 30 years ago. Besides the drawings i have no further instruction material. I am searching for copies of Martin Evans’ articles, published in the Model Engineer vol 133-134 (1968!) and 1987. I am located in germany so it is hard to get these issues from the local library. Is there a way to get these articles (as pdf, or real paper) ?

        Many thanks,
        Joa

I have the articles on the Simplex as I am building the Simplex at the moment. Please send me PM with your email address and I will send them to you.

I too have taken over the build from my father who purchased all the casting and then did not do much to it since.

          Regards

            Hi There
Is this a way to attract youngsters into the hobby?
Leave a set of Simplex castings under the workbench to be found when you have passed on?
            regards David

              Hi David,
at least with me that worked. but by the way my dad is still alive…
but due to the fact that he is 77years old now ia am starting to think in a melancholic mood about the times when i was a little boy visiting model steam meetings with him. We even traveled to the uk for this reason from germany…so i decided to finish what he started.

              regards,
              joa

Thank you, I have not been described as a youngster for many years but you are correct that seeing one of your Dad’s projects sitting there rusting away does push you to start working on them.

If I could get his Grayson lathe back working correctly then I would be getting on with his project much faster.

What is your line on people requesting or sending PDF copies of articles for personal use? Is there a copyright problem?

Unfortunately this site hasn’t been updated for several years. There is useful information there but there does’nt seem to be anyone to contact.

Many thanks for all your kind help. The Simplex web site was the first google gave me, it is a good starter but does not contain too much details..

I am still at the beginning of the learning process, i am studying all the drawings and articles, found some old books about live steam modeling, boiler making etc.
My experiences as an engineer are in other fields than steam models…
Making the boiler will be the bigest challenge, but step by step ….and with such a great community on the web it should be doable.

I never saw a Simplex running live (besides youtube), it would be much more easy to know somebody who ones one near to my home but in germany i found nobody, yet. All of them seem to be located in England (, of course) .Perhaps i have to consider that planning my next family summer holiday target…

When considering the boiler you will have to consider any rules laid down in Germany for model boilers. The Simplex boiler as described will not be accepted by UK boiler inspectors and insurance companies as they don’t like the T section crown stays. It is acceptable here in France but has to be fitted with a fusible plug which means you have to change the superheater design.

that is an important information to me, so i will have to look for a reference design that will be accepted…

Has there been any information published on a redesign of the boiler so it would conform to UK standards.

It would be a shame to get that far with the build and then find the boiler is not accepted. Mind you I am a long way off worrying about that.

Sorry, I haven’t seen a suitable redesign. This is a bit of a grey area as different boiler inspectors have different ideas. A commercially made boiler is CE marked and complies with the pressure vessels directive and should be accepted anywhere in Europe whatever it’s construction.

If you want to make a boiler youself and have it tested and used in the UK it is best to discuss it with the inspector you will be using before starting.

hi, where in the blue book does it outlaw T section crown stays…?? I certainly used them last year on a new boiler, and they are on most of the drawing sets I own?

Not sure if it is T section crown stays per se or the particular design used on the Simplex but I was told a few years back that they are not accepted. My point though is that if you want to have it tested and certified in Germany you have to comply with the German regs (whatever they are). If you want it tested and certified in the UK you have to comply with UK regs (and the inspector's interpretation).

how far back do the back issues dept keep records? many readers have huge numbers of issues of M.E. and would like to help others in the hobby. I agree with the copyrights protection but what if the relative article is no longer available should others help out ?

The phrase "should be acceptable…." Yes in theory CE marking ensures acceptability across the EU, but in practise old predjudices still apply and "some" countries do not follow the rules.
