Does ME have a means of obtaining a consolidated copy of a multi-issue article?

I would be interested in the still to be completed series "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About the Shaping Machine"

I expect that each relevant issue would be available for purchase; however, my interest lies solely in the shaper.

I am a subscriber to digital MEW. Failing a dedicated download of the consolidated article could I mini-subscribe (lacking a better description) on a single-use basis to only the required digital issues?

As an across the pond subscriber, conventional hard copy issues are the more difficult approach.

          Hi Dunc

I am afraid there is no simple answer to your request. All I can suggest is you purchase a year's subscription – you never know – you might find lots more of interest in there!

          I have PM'd you also.

            Dunc,

Both ME & MEW are available as back – numbers, priced singly (+post) from the Publishers. Could you not go that route for the few that you want or am I missing something?

My guess is that would cost considerably more than taking out a full digital subscription for a year

Since the last installment – in issue# ? – has not yet been published I have no idea of how many issues I would need to buy.

I used to purchase copies of MEW in a bookstore (I am in Canada) but that has become spotty and the reason that I obtained a digital subscription. I am not a reader of ME (not all that much into live steam) but I have infrequently purchased an individual issue to read an article. Spotty as the MEW hardcopy issues were, in my experience ME was worse. Or, there is such intensive interest that the few available copies are gone from the shelves! If I could find them locally, I would gladly purchase the necessary issues. Shipping costs on top of the price of the issues themselves tends to mount quickly.

I am looking for a workaround to a serious lack of newstand copies. Given the digital age I was hoping that something new could be arranged.

Dunc, if you click on the "digital back issues" advert at the bottom right of the home page it will allow you to purchase individual digital issues of whatever mags your shaper article may be in. This is likely to be the cheapest way as you only buy the issues with teh shaper in and digital will be cheaper than overseas paper postage

This is a quicker route to ME backissues

Thanks for that Jason, this must be new. You can look through the copy you may want to buy as well, so this is a welcome addition. Will save me going to Smith's and paying £3.10.     Seems to deal with Dunc's and my problem.         Phil

Agree, it looks good but "This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad", wonder if I can use iTunes via PC to do the same thing, if so, very good insdeed. Am loading iTunes on my PC to give it a try.

Maybe it is so new even the moderator's don't know about it ??? That's MHS for you.

I have recently started using PocketMags to source specialist mags and find it quite good, but the PC off-line reader is a litle "twitchy" though I see in another thread that the issue of printing may have been fixed.

Wish the PocketMag help were a little bit more informative, a recent enquiry resulted in an absolutly stupid reply. I'll be charitable and assume a PC rather than a human answered my enquiry

By the way I often see a message such as "Edited By Robbo on 18/07/2013 21:13:48" at the end of a message, is this generated by a particular editor program ??

Weeelllll !!! that was a waste of a good hour.

Thanks to the hints on this and the other thread I did manage to get my subs to ME, MEW and MM "hooked" to my PocketMag account, but it seems only current issue and issues back to August 2012 are available to me. Where are all the other archived issues and those previous issues I have actually paid for ??

Tried to read issues ON-LIne with
                            (a) Silver whatever … nice read but doesn't do anything else, no printing no nothing and can't find a way to read another issue other than to crash the reader and start over again.
                            (b) Flash whatever….nice read but no "print" facility in bottom left corner, instead have to "left mouse" to get menu which has a "print" function. Only problem it appears to be a "print screen" function NOT a page printing ability, also only that bit of the screen you are actually displaying. The "Flash" application kept complaining that it's script was not working and did I want to abort or continue in the hope that it would actually work.

                            Tried to read issues OFF-LINE.
I do have some special pocketmags separatly purchased which seem to work in the PC off-line reader BUT no print facility and they keep getting lost from my PC, having to download an issue again all the time is very slow even though my download speed is usually in excess of 1.5mB/sec. Can find no way either in the reader or the website to actually get my ME, MEW and MM issues on to my machine. Although the off-line reader is a Beta version I would have expected a bit more functionality, having to hack away at it till it does something intelegent, by that time you haven't a clue what you did to get it to work.

OH ! yes, somewhere along the line my spell checker has been disabled, maybe new version of FireFox doesn't have it.

Ya all hava good day now ya hear !!!
Think I'll go play with the Koala bears in the park and make some better use of my time.

                              Hi Brian,

The offline reader seems to be working OK on my PC. The mags are downloaded when available. The latest issue of each mag shows up in the 'Library" and clicking on one of those (either ME or MEW) opens up a window which shows all the other coipes of that particular mag on your machine …. as you say, it's only a couple of issues at this time – all the others are still in the archive on line.

When you click on a particular issue it opens in the (Flash) reader and the print button is the second icon in from the left at the bottom of the screen. It is a genuine print – not a printscreen. You sound as if you already had a copy of the offline reader. If you don't get the print icon, try downloading the latest release of the reader. The icon was missing initially but Diane had them update it.

Re your FF spell checker. If you mean it doesn't work in the editor here, that's situation normal (and all fouled up). The editor here insists that you use its own built-in checker or none at all and inhibits any browser based checker. Many have complained (and still do) to no avail.

                                Hi Dunc,

I'm by no means an expert on shapers but do own both a 7" Acorn and an Adept No 2, so I have spent some time trying to learn about these interesting machines – and to use them well. I therefore looked forward to the ME shaper articles with some interest but (so far) I can't say my sum total knowledge of shapers has greatly incereased, although I didn't really mind the anecdotal approach. The series may well find its feet as we move further into some more practical notes on actually using the machine and hopefully see some of the more unusual (and useful) work it can do.

However, my advice (in terms of learning material on the use of shapers) would be to save your time (and money) and simply look online for some of the really excellent material that was produced many years ago when the shaper was in more common commercial use.

Many advise getting the Ian Bradley book (which I have a copy of) but the best information source by far in my view is 'Shaper Work – a unit course' by Delmar. I have downloaded most of the units and a quick check shows they are about 179Mb of pdf files. I guess that they were originally some form of correspondence couse for would-be machinists – and they therefore fit my needs very well (a would be self-taught machinist). I've just looked for the download link I used but I'm afraid I can't find it offhand but I'm sure someone else here can help.

                                Regards,

                                IanT

I'm also interested in this series but have not read article #1 being a paper subscriber to MEW

If reports are that it is informative then I will buy future articles from a shop and buy the back issue for article #1

Hi Gents and thanks for your comments.

Sid……Before trying out the off-line reader for my comments in this thread I actually re-installed the reader direct from the PocketMags site, did not un-install as was concerned that I would loose all my downloaded mags..Anyway will have another go and "print" icon is definitely not on my screen.

Having "only" 58 posts on this site I had not gotten around to finding that the editor HAD a spell checker, must use it…Ta ever so much..

Neil…..I'll give the "Edit" function a try, except when posting while on line I usually make up any posts in Notebook or Word and use the appropriate spell checker. FF spell checker seems to work on most websites. In another thread someone mentioned that this editor "times out" if you take too long writing up a post, but certainly did not happen in my post about PocketMags. So I can use this editor with more confidence.

I find using this website a bit like learning some new Windows software, "we" are the beta users discovering all the "anomalies"..

In all the excitement I forgot to check out the iTunes access to the issues will do that tomorrow.

Those Koala bears were very friendly, must try that again to "unwind"..

Just tried the spell checker, does anyone know what SCAYT is ?? as the checker wants it enabled or disabled.

                                        Brian K

NB..just trying the edit function…ie..left click on the new posting and "back" so that your posting re-apears in the edit box..

wow!! it works, thanks Neil, but where is the date thingy ??

                                          Brian,

On the opening screen of the reader, there is (should be) a 'button" marked "Refresh". Click on that and then open a mag and look for the print icon …. that worked for me.

SCAYT = Spell Checking As You Type

You need to turn it on. It's not very good, uses American (or did the last I tried) and if you add custom words to the dictionary, it keeps them locally on your machine in a cookie. If anything deletes that cookie, it's back to square one. So that custom dictionary in the FF checker that you've been carefully building for the last 5 years goes to waste here.

Edit: to edit, you don't go "back" in the browser, you click on "Edit" in the green bar at the top of your post … edit will be there for a short time after you post the message – then it disappears.

Did the Koalas give you hiccups?
