Thank you for these, Vic.
I copied and pasted the links, and they reveal results or research giving the fascinating and thought-provoking history of the Whitworth thread, how it was devised (by averaging many factories’ practices) and the value of the standards long before official adoption, along with careful batch-production of the building frame components, in erecting the Crystal Palace in a remarkably short time.
The building was originally made to hold the Great Exhibition of the very latest advances in engineering; attended by huge numbers of people including those able to scrape together enough for the “Shilling Days”, and The Queen and Prince Consort. The royal couple seem to have been thoroughly modern people in their own time, with a fascination for the latest technical developments.
I can think of many people in our time who would do well to consider this quoted comment by one visitor, no less than Charles Babbage, the inventor of the “Difference Engine” mechanical computer:
‘Those who enjoy leisure can scarcely find a more interesting and instructive pursuit than the examination of the workshops of their own country, which contain within them a rich mine of knowledge, too generally neglected by the wealthier classes.’
