          Good afternoon All

Please can you help with what this set is called and does, I think it is for setting up accurately parts? The longest arm is 19.5" long. it is not in its original box.

it looks like its used for holding a stack of gauge blocks I've seen similar on a few you tube vids

As already mentioned, it looks like a slip cage, they had them in our inspection, not thought of highly by the inspectors as I recall.

Head over to eBay and do a search on "slip gauge accessory"

There's a couple on there at the moment, though with a few more parts than your set.

Thanks for information. I will put these and some other measuring items onto here and eBay. Clearing dads items now he has given up his model engineering

The jaws are used to clamp a stack of slip gauges (Gauge blocks ) as a precision measuring instrument.

Only ever saw such things used in the Standard Room, rather on the shop floor.

                      .

Which is presumably why old mart’s Inspectors didn’t think highly of them

… if the slips/blocks need clamping together, they are almost certainly out of spec.

Depends on how large of a stack of blocks you want to make. Gauge blocks used daily don't necessarily wring together all that strongly after a while. And wringing together a large stack becomes a game of chance. And depends on what you then need to do with the stack of gauge blocks. If you need to insert it into a large piece of precision machinery to set a large gap to a precision setting, you don't want all those blocks falling down inside the machinery so a clamp might be very handy.

                          Understood completely, Hopper

… I rather hoped I had chosen my words sufficiently carefully.
