I have had this on a couple of occassions. I get a PM from a member and send a reply back straight away. When I look I can see my reply has not been read.

Personaly if I ask a question I would surley check back to see if they answered or it just me?

      Are you still alive Des?

It's not just you; happened to me as well. They tend to be new or low post count members. I think they fire off messages scattergun and forget where and when they have posted. Now I send a one line response to see if they reply before creating a comprehensive reply.

Hi, I've had a few over the years as well.

They also tend to have e-mail notification of PMs turned off or they are going into a spam folder. Yes I get it too.

Yep, I've had a few but the ones that really annoy me is when you answer their question with quite a lengthy detailed reply and don't get a thank you, just bad manners.

You also get people posting a question and they get a number of helpful replies. They do not post again to say that their problem was solved. (Or even to say that none of the replies helped with their problem.)

                  Les.

And another alternative is that the "perpetrator" doesn't realise they have an answer? The flashing inbox is not very distinctive. Other than that, it's an education thing (or lack thereof) bit like please and thank you. Also a pity when the forum was modded they didn't fix the lack of b****y spline chunk.

                    Regards Ian.

And before the ex spurts inform "If you use- – – ", ALL other forums seem to have this function as standard.

                      .

Please forgive my naivety, Ian __ I have never seen the term “spline chunk” used before

                      Would you kindly explain ?

… I promise to thank you publicly.

It's likely they are using an iphone which doesn't show all the page so they don't spot the flashing inbox which is in full view at all times on desktop PC unless scrolling down a page

In the case I am refering to, the member asked if he could buy something from me. My reply, which he has not seen, was i would send him it free of charge, just give me your address.

Life intrudes sometimes! I was called out unexpectedly yesterday, and expected to be tied up today as well. Slept in with vertigo instead : just as well no one is relying on me today.

Several innocent possibilities have been mentioned already: not setting the email alert, spam filters, not noticing the flashing PM icon, or user has a small screen. What to look for isn't glaringly obvious either:

                            pmreceived.jpg

And of course you have to log in to see Private Message alerts. They don't show in anonymous mode.

As likely to be cock-up as rudeness: most people are decent enough.

You do, of course, have to be logged in (to that personality) to see that.

I'm with Michael – I don't know what a "spline chunk" is either.

Me too. A while back there was someone who did this repeatedly and frequently. I posted a message on one of the threads complaining about it but the message was "removed".

Yes I suppose we need to make allowances for Dementia too given the age of some of the membership, that is certainly what the problem was with the person you mention Peter.

If that person is who I think you mean I don't believe it was him (unless, of course, he has another login).

Another possible – they are not logged in, so the notification isn't showing.

Assuming they have ticked "remember me" when logging in, it only remembers you for a week or so, and you may not notice that you have been logged out until the next time you try to post

Well done Rob, as a retired drafty, sorry MG., DRAUGHTSMAN, I've always tried to ensure my spulling is corect so on other forums fori? I post on, a right click on the qwechonable spiling gives the choice even a thicky like me can deduce the one to chuse. Not trying to be pendantic (sic) as SOME are, the use of miss spelled Inglish really jangles my chunglies despite the idiots who state "language is subject to evolution."

No, the forum is not subject to a spelling contest but given the addition of Chinglish to our hobby, It beggars beleif that we can't find an easy way ON THIS FORUM to get it rite.

Same applies to post numbers and reposting via a reply to pages of repeats BUT I digress.

This is what I see when quoting Circlip's post in the forum editor:

                                                      spelling.jpg

Spelling mistakes are underlined in red, and right-clicking them on my computer produces lists of suggested corrections. It's a Browser feature. Possibly Ian hasn't switched it on.

The forum's spell checker (ABC Button) also works, but it defaults to US English and I haven't found a way of getting it to remember I'm British.

Oh, and understanding 'language is subject to evolution' isn't a sign of idiocy. Quite the opposite! Dare I suggest only thickos believe English is fixed? Tin hat on and retreats to bunker…
