I used to work for Electricity North West ( the equivalent for the North West of England of National Grid for you).

The letter you have shown does not say that your electricity voltage was low.

It is a standard letter to tell you that your supply will be switched off while they do some work on the network.

In your case it says it is to refurbish the low voltage overhead line network to bring it up to modern standards.

So unfortunately, that is not the cause of your problem.

In your position I’d cut your losses and get a new 3ph motor and a suitable VFD. […]

        Absolutely spot-on, Rob !!

Agreed 100%   Check out the plate on your old motor which should give you the Kw/Hp required.   Will give your mill many more years of life

Robcox made his suggestion before the OP confirmed that the mill already had a 3 phase motor and a VFD (both of which are now working) so its pointless going over old ground.

Hi Dave, bearing in mind the huge geographical spread of members, the real stumbling block would be the travelling costs ? Though not a qualified electrician I have worked as such and have most of the test gear to solve many of the problems one may find. I’m a great believer in repair, where possible, and also simplicity. The vogue for 3ph VFDs is far from simple if the operator does not understand the set up or operation, and there is a problem. There have been some interesting problems over the years, one I remember well of a motor where It was said I talked nonsense. The centrifugal switch was a change over, not a simple switch. The wiring diagram was in tubal cains ME workshop hand book as a special on account of being not common, I also had the makers diagram for this type of motor. I think the advice on here is best backed up by local experts Etc, which would prove cost effective rather than specialists from away, that had to travel. Noel.
