Hi all, i am a new member from Bilston West Midlands, I have just bought a Harrison Vertical mill to stand by my Denford Viceroy mk2 lathe in my workshop, the mill is in very good condition it came from a school where its been stood for years unused, A good clean up and oil changes was all that was needed,

One thing its missing is the dowel pin that lines up the head to zero, the hole the pin fits in has a slight taper, could anyone with a similar mill give me a dimensional sketch of the pin so i can make one.

      Any assistance would be appreciated.

I would think there is a strong possibility that the pin is a standard taper pin which are readily available. The dimensions should be easy to find with a bit of googling, the awkward bit might be deciding whether it is an imperial or metric pin.

I would think that assessing the rest of the mill fixings might indicate metric or imperial.

An option might be to take a cast of the cavity, remove and measure. Or is it a through hole – in which case measuring at each end and along, with a little maths, might sort out the taper angle

Hi Trevor Welcome to the Forum. I believe that the taper pin should have a threaded portion to allow it to be extracted, with a nut, and a small up stand to tap the dowel in( not hit heavily ) so that you do not damage the thread.

I have just bought the same machine. Mine is convertible to horizontal milling. You can read about it on the mig welding forum. See my posts entitled eBay-tastic.

My vertical head is also missing the taper pin, so if anyone finds out the spec, I would love to know too!

Is the standard taper for taper pins 1:48?

It is for imperial, 1:50 for metric.

I made a pin from a m12 bolt, its 1:48 and the taper is 55mm long, I left 25mm thread for extracting the pin, with the pin in place I clocked the spindle to the table with a 250mm sweep of the clock and got 0.05mm from one side to the other, this repeats well so jobs a good un, thanks for all help and suggestions
