Have you got the banjo and changewheels for it?

I was thinking that, lot of spray in areas you don’t really want it; that tool post for example.

Can’t beat stripping a machine down before doing any beautification, might be painting a lump of scrap or attempting to Polish the proverbial.

Bit of extra paint won’t hurt. I’m wondering what make it is. I guess you still need a motor but will soon be turning out some chips. Have fun.

Hmmm, extra paint? there was once a Myford on Ebay painted entirely in blue, leadscrew, slide ways and all.

My brother stripped it down few years back, shot blast everything and repaired what needed to be done however then left it to rust in bits. Dingbat!

I’ve cleaned back up and put it all back together in my garage this time.

Yes then threw paint at it. I’m no detailer lol.

Yes I have the link and arm and change gears.

                    It’s a 1940 denham junior mk2.

I’ve just had the bad news my original motor is toast so trying to decide what motor setup to get.

Any thoughts on the motor would be much appreciated.

Would it be too far from original to fit a VFD and 3 phase motor?

<p style=”text-align: center;”>It’s definitely something I’m considering, I’ve been watching videos on YouTube of people using sewing machine motors and inverters from aliexpress to run their small lathes.</p>

Nothing much to contribute here….. But I used a Denham when I was a student working at a machine tool dealership during the uni holidays. It had the same dished 3 jaw chuck, never seen another since……  It was a simple and robust machine, I rather liked it, and it lived ion the ‘old’ workshop down the street from the main workshop which had a Colchester Triumph 2000. The ‘old’ workshop was a 1950’s time warp of a place which was pretty much where I worked turning old scrappers into decent saleable machines. We also had a huge Lang with a big square headstock, that was fun to play with.

That chuck looks like one that came with my old Colchester. If it is the same (and in case you don’t already know) it is a Taylor conical chuck. I was told they were once considered one of the best chucks and that view is re-stated in the info on: https://www.lathes.co.uk/taylor/page3.html

I had one of these when I had my first foray into “model engineering”, about 40 years ago.

If I remember correctly, they have a geared head with 6 speeds, the lowest being 30? and the highest being 600 or 660?, a bit slow for modern tooling, I would suggest.

A VFD might not be the best way to spend money on it, unless you plan to run it at higher than the design speed.

They have a nice clutch, and come with a 127 tooth change wheel for metric threads.

                                Mark.

Very interesting to hear about the chuck it has a plaque so I’ll take a look on the weekend and report back.

From factory they had to speed options 30 to 600 or 70 to 1400 so I’ll max it out at about 1000rpm.

Only major issue is how tight I am and not wanting to spend alot of money on a motor setup.

Any suggestions on a cheap option?

                                    I think I’m going to go with a 1.5hp 1.1kw 1500 rpm 4 pole single phase motor.

It’s has 6 speeds so I’ll have enough options to do what I need.
