      Hi,

I am in N Ireland and am setting up a new workshop and would like to get in touch with members.

My problem is at the moment I bought a used Medding pillar drill and the old Brooks electric motor went on fire and could have burnt down my new workshop before I got started!

I have a new motor but need a 5 step motor pulley the original size is 138mm wide bottom pulley rising to 48mm wide pulley at the top, the overall height is 60mm.

      Can anyone help me out?

          Welcome to the forum Andrew.

The good news is that a suitable pulley should not be impossible to track down. The worst case will be using an approximation that my need to be bushed or bored out to suit.

I suggest putting a classified 'wanted ad' on the forum (or in the magazine) as it woudl be small enough to post.

I bought a new motor which has a larger spindle dia so I tried to enlarge it but it has ended up oversized.

I have a Meddings motor pulley but it's 153mm diameter at the big end and 40mm at the small end. It's from a Pacera MF4 drill.

What size shaft on your motor?

Bore the pulley, push and glue (loctite or araldite) a bush into the enlarged bore and then rebore to suit the new motor shaft. I bushed a pulley on my new (to me) mechanical hacksaw in this manner to allow me to use a single phase motor with a smaller shaft than the original three phase motor.

The old motor shaft was 5/8″ my new motor is 19mm dia.

Pete can you tell me what height is your pulley and how many pulleys as I need the drive belt to line up with the chuck spindle pulley.

Andrew it's a 5-way pulley 63mm tall. I could bore it to 19mm for you. it needs boring anyway as the bore is slightly bell-mouthed from previous poor fitting. I also have the spindle pulley.

                        Pete, Andrew

My apologies for busting into your conversation, but do you (Pete) have a spare quill for a Pacera MF4?

I have a complete one which has a cracked quill which I bought in a garage sale, the damage wasn't evident until I cleaned it.

                        Many thanks Simon

Simon yes I have a very nice quill. Also have a reasonably good spindle which has a slightly scruffy taper that nevertheless holds tapers well. I was giving consideration to sourcing a MT2 reamer to clean it up. You could send me a PM to save de-railing Andrew's thread.

Pete, thanks for the pulley offer but it won’t work as the ratio of pulleys needs to be the same as my old one to use all 5 speeds.

Can you give me some advice on the best way to bore a new one as I don’t want to make the same mistake as before?

                            Should I buy a 19mm reamer?

Does it need to be exactly the same size. I would've surmised that a pulley set up that gives you +/- 50 rpm would suffice for most drilling ops in most materials?

There's no exact requirement for drill speed, just ball-park figures. A little change in ratio would not hurt.

My pulley set gives the speeds shown on the tag.

Neither are in terrific condition so you could have the pair pretty cheap with the belt. The motor pulley for sure needs boring out. That said, the advice of sleeving and re-boring your original is valid. Loctite a sleeve into it, bore back out to 19mm then cut a key it will last for years.

                                  Your query about alignment.

You need to align the belt by locating the pulley on the motor shaft, to avoid wear.

My Chinese Mill/Drill shredded the primary belt within six months, because the motor pulley was out of position.

Having realigned it, using a straight edge across the pulleys, the replacement is still going strong some 16 years later. The secondary belt is still the original!

If you bush the new pulley, and want to be certain, you can drill and tap the pulley/bush on the joint line and Loctite in a grubscrew as a dutch key.

Hi Pete, I didn’t think about changing both pulleys what would you take for them?

If you pay the postage you can have them for £20. I'll bore the motor pulley to 19mm for you.

That sounds fair enough, can I check what is the bore of the chuck spindle pulley I think it is imperial.

Also can you send me your address and email so I can send you a Hermes label to put on the package.

There's no pulley on the spindle, but the gearbox input pulley which is what I think you mean pulley is 9/16" bore.

Pete, This could be a problem there is no gearbox on my pillar drill it has a belt from the motor directly to the chuck pulley and the spindle measures 7/8″ 22.2mm with a 5mm keyway

Ah yes, different machine entirely. Mine has a 2-speed gearbox and 5 groove pulley for ten gears.
