Hi from a long-term lurker on these forums. I’ve finally broken cover simply in order to pursue an item in the classified section… hopefully!

I’ve collected a lathe, a mill and a lot of hand tools over the years although my main interest has remained a fascination with things that fly, which is something I’ve been involved with since short trouser days.

Now, with more time on my hands I’d love to know more about how to set up the lathe and mill, although I have also found that tackling a specific job is a sure way to improve knowledge. The present mini-job on the Little John is a quill collar for the Mill to enable a DRO to be fitted. Prior to that it was four shuttle valves for a model vectored thrust system.

      Time flies in the workshop!

      Paulbw.

          Welcome!

As you already know lots of help available for almost any subject.

You may be able to help, others on here.

The Raglan Little John is a good machine. I've had dealings with a friends. Made him a four way toolpost to go on the Top Slide, so that he could change tools easily, even if he was taper turning.

Welcome, Paul, there are some very useful books to help you get on the right track, which the more knowledgable amongst us will be able to recommend.

Thanks again Gents. Yes, Pershore is just up the road from me Henry.

My latest project would appear to be to find a reliable removal company to move a newly purchased Lathe. Any hints would be gratefully received. The site search button doesn’t give any returns to my searches.

I don't have any contacts I'm afraid Paul. What weight is it? I installed a GH1322 (about 500kg) here by myself, if its that sort of size/weight drop me a pm via here, maybe we can sort something out…

I have seen a company called Landylift recommended by people on this forum.

This is a link to their advert: Landylift

Thanks for your responses both. Weight is something in the order of 310Kg and it needs to be moved from Cumbria to here (Cheltenham).

I’ll have a look at Landylift thanks V8Eng and I’ll drop you a PM Henry.

Again, thanks for all your help. V8Eng suggested I contact Landylift and my new-to-me Lathe duly arrived yesterday afternoon. Very professional service with no hiccups.

I am now reading the book of words before firing it up..!

Suggest that you contact the Cheltenham Society of Model Engineers, and join. In the not too distant future you will be able to meet folk with similar interests, some of whom will, be prepared to offer advice face to face and possibly demonstrate techniques.
