My experience is from car engines – cylinder heads arevre-torqued hot for cast iron but completely cold for aluminium. That demonstrates that hot aluminium heads can distort if tightened down hot.
Also heads with overhead cams cannot be resurfaced if they distort – but I have been told that if the cam bearings can be persuaded to line up, an overheated aluminium head can sometimes be recovered by applying heat and bolting it down securely before allowing to cool off. Then skimming, the all-important bit being that the cam bearings must be in line.
