      Hello

Another new member. I have recently turned to the “model Engineer” have been a recent subscriber to another magazine.

I am a retired Maintenance supervisor in the field of industrial process control. A job I followed all my career until retirement, and having served a traditional craft Apprenticeship with the now defunct C.E.G.B. Engineering has always been an interest to me. It was natural for me to turn to model engineering upon retirement but I have found it difficult to find the time to get stuck in. I also struggle with some of the machining requirements. To my knowledge there are no engineering model clubs anywhere close to me hence I am not able to find someone to discuss issues with. I live in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales. I am getting on with building a Stuart 10H and should shortly get it turning. My workshop is very small and I have tried hard to equip it out with the required equipment. I have made a few mistakes along the way eg. A small Chinese lathe being the biggest, still its with me now so I just get on with it. I look forward to reading the forum topics with the hope that some of them might get me out of a sticky situation.

        Welcome!

What are your particular interests /projects?

If you need any help / advice just ask; someone will come to your aid.

        Presumably, you are UK based?

Lots on here with Chinese lathes. Plenty of advice of advice on fettling and setting up to get it closer to a silk purse.  Surprising what can be achieved with a bit of fine tuning and attention to detail.

But obviously, £800 doesn’t buy you a toolrool lathe!

Try to look at some of the back numbers of M E W where folk have improved their mini lathes.

I’m displaying mine tomorrow at a bus museum!

Milford Haven sems to have an active M E club, Pembrokeshire Model Engineers, but might to far to visit / join.

I hope this message finds its way back as a reply to Howard. This is all new stuff to me. Never been on a forum before. Thanks for your reply. In truth I cut short my introduction and will get round to improving it soon. Thanks for the tip on the Milford Haven Club. Only 20miles away and I worked in Milford for 30 years and never heard of the club. did a little research after your post to find that their storage shed burnt to the ground some 4 years ago. I will visit soon to see if they are still running. Thanks for the tip. Will post soon on my improved profile.

You were lucky to get out in three days. I remember being stuck at home for a lot longer.

The two guy’s I was working with had families and wanted to get back as for me there were far to many attractive WRAF’s around I could have stayed longer 🙂

Wynford you may want to change your username so the whole world can’t see your email address, this is usual safety on forums.

To do it click “progile” on the green bar at top of page, then click “personal” on the screen that comes up, Then “Edit on the next screen that comes up and then on the final screen scroll down and alter what is in the box “Display publically as”

Many thanks for that tip. All new to me. I am unable to change my user name, so have changed my public display. I hope this is enough or I may be forced to delete my account.

We ALL had to learn once, and are still learning.

Sometimes, you push the boundaries, to what you nhave never ndone before, because you have to.  But all useful experience.

If you are new to mlathework, buy, and read, one or more books

L H Sparey, In Bradley, Stan Bray, Harold Hall are good authors.

David Clark, Dave Fenner and Neil Wyatt have all mwritten books on using the mini lathe.  The basic principles are the same, just that the details alter from machine to machine.

Once you have a good grasp of the basics, you can expand your range of activities, and given sufficient detail, operate almost any lathe.
