Hi, I am Steve. My hobbies are predominantly vintage cameras, carpentry and electronics, however I have recently embarked on an interest in restoring vintage tools as well.

About 25 years ago I purchased an antique brass and mahogany field camera with leather bellows which has been in storage most of this time and I am only now just getting round to working on this due to work commitments and the fact that I have spent many years working on my house.

I have a small workshop in my garage which contains my woodworking equipment but I am wanting to expand into machining and metalworking so I can put into practice some of the skills I learnt during my engineering apprenticeship I did around 45 years ago.

Hi Steve. Roughly where are you. Often helps to get relevant information and contacts to you if you put something in your profile. You might find a Model Engineering club near you who will be helpful and often have second hand machines and tools as well as advice. Don’t be put off by anyone who moans that some clubs are only interested in running locomotives for the public. That is jsut the way of subsidising the club.

Hi Bazyle, thanks for your advice. I did try an update my profile but there is a message when I click on the profile tab that says “You do not have the required user role to view this user list.” Have I done something wrong when setting up to register?

          Thanks

No … You have done nothing wrong

This is a known problem [for members old and new] which we need to be fixed.

Hello, as Michael says, it’s a known problem for all of us.
What you can do, in anticipation of when the issue gets addressed, is prepare your profile ready to go.
From the Green Bar > (your) Profile > Settings Tab > Profile Visibility Tab > scroll down to “About Yourself” > Biographical Info.
There is other useful stuff on that settings page as well

Thanks Michael and Bill. I will update biographical info as you suggest.

                Thanks

                    Welcome!

Restoring a Field camera will be a most satisfying activity.

A lathe will make such work so much easier and better.  You will be able to make new parts, and literally, nuts and bolts, if you so wish. And making a few Accessories will not only make the machine more versatile, but provide useful experience and a few tools that make life so much easier in the future.

Finding and joining a local M E club will be so much help in gaining experience and confidence.

With a lathe, all manner of things become possible.

                    Howard

Thanks all for the welcome. Until I can update my profile here is a bit more info about me.

I am a Design Manager working and living in London. I work for a large consultancy on infrastructure projects (mostly rail). I started my career many years ago as an apprentice for a well-known lift and escalator company. My apprenticeship covered many areas of engineering from electronics, electrical engineering to machining and metal fabrication. My hobbies include photography, carpentry, restoration of vintage tools and antique cameras.
