I have a Chipmaster lathe running it's original variator. It is very noisy so I decided to see if a new set of bearings would help. Mostly this is going OK but I'm having trouble with identifying some needle roller bearings. I don't know how to properly measure them but they do not seem to be near anything that I can find listed. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The cages usually have the part number on them, try a magnifying glass. Otherwise measure the shaft, the bore and the overall length and get in touch with a firm like The Bearing Boys, they may be able to help.

Often, needle roller bearings have an outer cage and run direct on the shaft itself.

It looks a s if the original cage has broken up.

If you measure the individual rollers, adimater and length, and count them, quoting the shaft diameter , a bearing supplier might be able to identify the bearing.

Arc Euro have a limited range of Metric nedle rollers, but will, I am sure be helpful.

Probably googling needle roller bearings will bring up a good range, but it looks as if you need to talk to a supplier.

Have you joined the 'Colchester Lathe' group on Groups.io ? As well as potential information and help from people who have the machine since a lot of people remove the variator you might find someone who can sell an old one for spares.

Thanks. I've had a very close look but there are no markings. Not sure what I didn't think of measuring the shaft and bore, seems obvious now you mention it!!

Yes thanks I have. Funnily enough this is a spare I've just bought. I was too scared to take my original one apart, which does work but is also very noisy
