      Hi Engineers all,

Is anyone out there building, or has built the loco called “Eric” described in the book “Steam Trains in your Garden” by Brian Wilson?

I have a query about the crossheads which I hope someone who has built the loco might be able to answer.

Thank you Peter for your lead to the Yahoo group. I have duly joined up and it looks to be just what I’m after for help.

Raymond McMahon tells me that you had a great conversation about the Darjeeling Class B loco. Good luck with its construction.

              Hi Donald and Peter.

I have just completed an Eric, but I am having a problem with the burner and am currently planning to experiment with a radiant heater type burner. I will let you know how I get on.

The Steammodelloco16mm group should certainly be able to help.

                Hi all.

I have placed a photo of my Eric in the album. I am not sure how to direct you directly to it from here, so you will have to search for it.

                  Hi Eddie,

I see your Eric, looks almost finished, and nice in dark red.

I have only just begun my Eric and have decided to make the six coupled with trailing bogie version, it’ll probably take me years because I have about four  other projects all on the go at once.

Minnie nearly finished, Clayton nearly finished, 5cyl radial I.C. aero engine half made, I hope I live long enough.

My question with the Eric is this; on the drawing for the coupling rods it shows the small end of the rod as having a 2.5mm hole through it, yet on the drawing for the crosshead pin which holds the small end of the connecting rod to the crosshead, the pin is shown as being being 3.2mm (or 1/8″) dia.

Any ideas what it should be; I tend to favour going with the 3.2mm (or 1/8″) dia. choice.

                  Happy engineering.

                    Hi Donald

If you have joined the Yahoo 16mm group you will find in the files section a list of corrections to the book. Look for Steam Trains in Your Garden – Everything you need to know. Then look for ericcorrection.pdf for a list of corrections. Basically you are correct in saying you can drill 3mm and then make the outer radius of the con rod 3mm.

Yes I have got a part finished Minnie, plus various marine engines in various stages of completion.

                    Good luck with Eric.

If you are building a locomotive called “Eric”, shouldn’t you be building it  Little by Little?

Thank you Eddie for your pointer to the ericcorrection.pdf – I see that others have had the same problem with various valvegear pins; 3mm is obviously the way to go.

Geoff, I honestly have no idea what your “Little by Little” reference alludes to in connection with “Eric”?

Sorry, Donald, it was an attempt at humour.
It is the title of a 19th Century book by Frederick Farrar, read about it on Wikipedia.

Geoff, thank you for your explanation.

I was beginning to think I was a bit thick by not seeing the joke but when I note that the book “Eric or Little by Little” was published in 1858 I think I may be excused for not making the connection right away.
