Another item from the garage of my demised son in law. It was with other items from his grandfather. No makers name or symbol. The two ‘Blades’ pull out like a pen knife they are not sharp but straight sided. It is all brass and thickness of the two blades appears to be the same.

Ah! The old WingWang marking out bevel. Essential for scraping mayonnaise out of the bottom of the jar perhaps.

It is a wood-worker’s bevel. I have one that looks almost identical, even down to the type of wood, except that mine has one long blade, rather than two short blades. It still gets a fair amount of use for DIY projects as nothing much in our house is square.

Not convinced about the “bevel gauge” idea, as there doesn’t appear to be any locking screws.  Stiff joint maybe like a Jenny Caliper, but then the blades look like they’d be a pig to get out.  Also, why two blades?

If you are making a carvel planked boat, you have to put flats onto the frames where the carvel planks are screwed to, at the same time, the edge of the plank has to be beveled to mate with the previous plank and also beveled for the next plank. This changes along the length of the plank and also for each plank.

Often, a plank will be fitted on one side and then repeated on the other side (a gauge like this could be used ??).

However this is pure guesswork !

Could it be used when marking out roof rafters where you have compound angles to cut on the hip rafters – another guess!

                  What is it?

A de-scaling knife, since there is nothing in the picture nor in the description to tell us the size.

It could be 4″ long; it could be 24″ long. Are they 10mm squares in the background or 1″ squares?

My single-bladed version is about a foot and a half long and has a stiff joint. The blade pushes out easily enough by pushing it from the side.

                    James.
