I bought this rather nice little Timer at the weekend [bound to come in useful for something eventually] .. it's built like a high-quality Kitchen Timer, but the mystery is: Why would one specify 0.936 Rev. per 24 Hours ?

The "can" is about 80mm diameter, and I guess that MET. might refer to Meteorology.

        Grateful for any info.

              .

'fraid not … Sidereal runs "faster" than Solar time; this one is running slower.

That's what I had in mind

Does it have any relation to the Tides, I wonder?

                  tides would be 24/(24' 50" )  or about 0.966..

                    0.936 = 117/125

Can't see that it helps though.

                        .

Strangely; I did find one reference to the rate of 0.936

about half way down page 3 of this

                        But that doesn't clarify anything.

How about a drum type chart recorder? Allows for the margin at either end of a 24 hour chart.

I think you are probably right, thanks

This page lists 26 Hours as the rotation time for a One Day drum.

Probably correct some sort of chart recorder drive motor.

Interestingly the value p=0.936 is used in a lot in statistics calculations. Given the example found of its use in a spore sampling / collecting experiment, maybe the timer set at this rate aids in their analysis of the results.

MichaelG, might be worth contacting the Imperial War Museum to see if they have any info on it!

The engravings on the case, particularly the 'MK 2B' are almost certainly military marks, so would have had some role to play in WW2!
Military pocket watches were engraved similarly, such as 'MK V' or 'G.S. MkIII' etc!
